With the emergence of affordable subscription fees and the growing divergence of free and paid content on music streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Sirius XM and Pandora, it seems clear that the music streaming market is moving towards paid services going forward. It even seems possible that free (i.e., supported only by ad payments) music could eventually die out. While Spotify’s initial stance was to offer content uniformly across paid and free tiers, it is now considering making new music releases exclusive to its paid services.
